Letterpress Open Studio is a self-directed course which is intended to provide support for work on independent projects. You will have individual guidance from the instructor and will benefit from group discussions and
critiques. In addition to addressing technical issues, you will have the opportunity to further develop your ideas and personal approach to letterpress printing.

Explore the expressive art of letterpress printing in this hands-on introductory workshop. You will explore typography, metal and wood type, hand typesetting for letterpress printing, embossing and applications for your own books and broadsides. Typefaces, paper, colour, and using illustrations in your design will be discussed. You’ll go all the way from start to finish by designing and setting your own text, printing, sorting, and distributing type. Bring words and ideas to class. Instruction will be in the Letterpress Room at Emily Carr.

Dates Tuesday Evenings February 19, 2008 - April 1, 2008 7pm-10pm

Level: Beginner/Intermediate / Advanced - 8 students maximum Learn to make linocut prints. Instruction takes the student through planning to transferring an image to the block, carving and printing the image. Learn a simple two colour block printing method. Opportunity is also available for intermediate and advanced students to work with reduction linocut and other advanced techniques. Everyone can carve, print and edition a plate! Dundarave member, Andrea Taylor has taught printmaking at Dundarave Print Workshop, with Mountain Haven Arts and through her private studio, Cotton Socks Press.
